now I tried it with a kernel 2.4.17, the output above is from the
/proc/bus/usb on the 2.2.16 kernel. Unfortunately, there is no
/proc/bus/usb with my 2.4.17 kernel?!?

But it tries to do something anyway, but unfortunately locks Linux
completely, when I connect the USB hard drive. /var/log/messages lasts
words are:

usb-storage: Bulk status Sig 0x53425355 T 0xff0158 R 0 Stat 0x0
usb-storage: Bulk logical error
usb-storage: Bulk reset requested

Thanks to Matthew Dharm I found a patch
(http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/4563/2001/11/0/7207800/). After I
applied this, the drive can be accessed and partitioned, BUT when I try to
create a file system, I always get "file size limt exceeded". It happens
with ext2 and reiserfs. My partions are 2 GB and 4 GB in size.

http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/linux/linux-kernel/2001-46/0998.html told me the
solution: I became root by su and su sets RLIMIT_FSIZE to 0x7fffffff,
thus, operations for the whole disk do usually not work anymore.

But now it works! Problably this might help somebody here on the list.

        Michael
