> Can you provide me with the 'dmesg' of the 2.5.6 run?

No problem. Attached, but here are some highlights.

usbcore and usb-uhci look fine, but when hid loads;

usb.c: hid driver claimed interface de9fd200
hid-core.c: HID probe called for ifnum 1
usb-uhci.c: ENXIO 80000280, flags 0, urb de94b5c0, burb de94b540
hid-core.c: reading report descriptor failed
hid-core.c: v1.31:USB HID core driver
usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 2, frame# 981

this 'interrupt, status 2' message repeats every second or three with
varying frame numbers

then loading keybdev causes large numbers of

hid-core.c: nonzero status in input irq -32

Environment is RH 7.2 with errata, in particular I'm using gcc-2.96-98 and
glibc-2.2.4-19.3
rc.sysinit modified to NOT load any USB modules automatically
CONFIG_USB_DEBUG enabled and DEBUG & DEBUG_DATA defined in hid-core.c
IOGear aka ATEN switch is the only USB device attached

Please let me know if there's anything else I can test.
