Just to let everyone know, I followed the instructions on the first link 
below, making a small change to a header file in the Linux source. 
Re-compiled the modules, and it now works!  Hooray!! Linux now sees the 
SmartMedia card as a SCSI HD.

Once again - thanks David for pointing out those links!
