There is a lot of readers which can write and work great with Linux.
Just look at www.qbik.ch and in usb-storage sources.

My personal pick is PQI Travel Flash - I bought it for $25 and
it reads and writes 5 types of cards including SmartMedia and
CompactFlash - In Red Hat 7.2 worked out-of-box, drivers were alredy
included in the system.

Phison//AVL 5in1 reader is also nice and cheap.
