I have one of the IOGear ION enclosures that I've put an old laptop drive into. Works great on Linux even with USB 2.0. I don't know if you could hack it to work with a cdrom drive. One odd thing about the device, is that it takes power off of a pass-through ps/2 connection that you have to connect to the machine.
