I'm surprised that hotplug didn't mount it. However, did you read the user 
guide about how you can mount it yourself? You may want to get the latest 
version of the hotplug scripts from linux-hotplug.sf.net.

Sounds like it is working them. Have you tried to update your gpm or 
XFree86 configuration to actully use this device?
