If you use the input later, the order will be fairly consistent. Wouldn't it just be easier to just use the event interface though? Then you *know* that you have the right device. And you'll get at least as much data. Later kernels have/will-have a /proc/bus/input system, which can probably help you. Also, maybe you should ask this on the linux-console mailing list?
