In the part of my post you snipped I said I was using /dev/input/mouseN
successfully which are indeed the mousedev devices. Sorry for the
confusion.

I was hoping for more than 'fairly consistent'. Does this mean that
there is
no way to figure out which physical device the mousedev devices are
connected to?
I guess I could go the dmesg route, modifying mousedev.c to report this.

X does not have support for mice to use the event interface.
(Although thanks to your pointing me at linux-console, I now know that
someone
is working on it, ;)
