I think I said in my other post that there is a /proc interface coming (in CVS 
now). Maybe you could add that?

Or you could add an ioctl to mousedev - surely better than parsing dmesg...

Indeed, but I think that there are gpm patches readily available in the 
linuxconsole CVS.
So the path would be
USB--> Input core --> evdev --> (userspace) --> gpm --> X.

Yeah, here's the patch for gpm.
