Thanks Matt, that was a very helpful insight !!!

One remaining question: How does the Kernel decide which modules it is going to 
automatically load (e.g. usbcore.o) and which ones it is not (e.g. aha1542.o) ?  It 
appears that this decision occurs before the very first "script" file (rc.sysinit ?) 
gets control.  Is this "decision" hardwired into the Kernel code, or is there some 
kind of configuration file that I have not found yet ?
