Well, there is no sign of any device but the root hub.

Yes, only the the root hub. Sorry for dump questions: Are you sure the
scanner is connected correctly and has power? Do you have more than 2
USB ports? Maybe you used the "wrong" ones and those aren't connected
or detected for some reason?

Do you have other USB devices you could test? Does the scanner work
with other operating systems or computers?

The scanner should show up in /proc/bus/usb/devices even if the
scanner module is not loaded at all.

Ok, but doesn't help. The problem is not with the scanner driver or
permissions.
