Can you tell a newbie how to investigate that possibility?

Yes, on my first reboot after installing the wireless drivers, everything
worked fine. I then changed the wireless config to use a fixed IP instead of
DHCP (the default), and rebooted again. That's when my problems started. The
only thing I haven't been able to do with the wireless card is use SMB.
Otherwise (http, ftp, ssh, mysql, etc.) it seems fine.
