Forgive my ignorance, is that a stock 2.4.22 kernel or is it patched in Gentoo?
Either way I'd try a different kernel just to see what happens.  Do you have
the .config that was used to create the kernel?

You might have posted the output.  What chipset?  Is it VIA?

I wonder if it's something to do with sharing interrupts?
