Are you sure it erases them?  Have you checked that they're gone by
first re-reading the card after unplugging it _before_ you use W98 to
destroy the data, and then plugging back into Linux afterwards to see
what Linux thinks is there?  Are you unmounting the card properly from
Linux?  Is there just the one partition on the card?  Are you sure
it's a properly formatted vfat partition?
