FYI: I'm pretty sure now that the player is actually the
"Packard Bell AudioKey L PA30/256MB" internally, so this might apply to 
Laurent Mugnier's problem as well.

My problem was that I formatted the stick using W2K.
If I use "mkfs.msdos /dev/sda1", everything's fine. I can now use it with 
windoze and linux boxes w/o any problems, no files vanish.

That weird behaviour is reliably reproducable.
Whenever I format the stick with W2K, the files copied to it with Linux will 
vanish when plugging the stick into the usb hub (even w/o mounting it), 
regardless of long or short filenames.
Upon using mkfs everything works perfectly (long filenames, too).
