I just started reading _all_ the comments to all the hits I got at the device
list when searching for "mp3" and got the jackpot:
http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=1974

The previously absolutely not-working "mpX Rome 256MB" was working within
seconds (listen up Laurent, this might fix your prob as well):

Just use mtools:
- map /dev/sda1 to c (or whatever letter you like) in /etc/mtools.conf:
   # drive c: file="/dev/sda1"
- change the permissions on /dev/sda1:
   # chmod ugo+rwx /dev/sda1
- plug in the player
- point Konqueror to:
   floppy:/c
- and just drag&drop the files onto the player
- (or use the command line mtools instead of Konq)
- unplug the player and have fun

And I filled up the player almost to it's limits - no data loss.
It now works flawless with W2K (with the Manager app and as a storage device)
and Linux, so swapping files is no problem at all. (well, the settings are
not persistent, but I guess that's a bug in the firmware)
