Hello
I would like to use my PDA (Sharp Zaurus 5500) at home as wireless LAN router (it has a wireless CF card and put in its docking station there is ethernet over usb available). The banal problem is, I need to connect two male usb plugs (from the cable modem and from the docking station). So a usb hub would be a solution.
It should be doable, *if* you don't mind going into the Zaurus and editing the appropriate wireless config files so that the wireless LAN will route to the USBnet one. Basically, you'll need to configure the Linux on the PDA to route between the wireless and the USB networks. In theory, it should work fine if you confiure it right. B^)
My (maybe somewhat silly) question is..
i) does ethernet over usb work over a usb hub (getting an IP with a dhcp request)? How does the wireing need to be set up (modem or zaurus or nobody plugged to the uplink?)(Is there a 'master device' as usual with usb devices; or is this not the case with ethernet over usb)?
You have to plug your Zaurus into your computer. You *can* do this via a USB hub with other USB devices plugged into it if you so desire. IIRC, the Zaurus runs a small dhcp server to configure the p-t-p USB network between the computer and the PDA. When you plug in the Zaurus to the USB port, the computer's hotplug scripts send a dhcp request to the PDA in order to configure the computer->PDA side of the connection. So long as the Zaurus can talk to the computer through the USB hub, you should have no problems plugging in other devices to the hub as well (OK, so you may lose some bandwidth while they are all active at the same time.... B^) [You *can* change the way the Zaurus configures its USB network. While I was looking at the Zaurus configuration files, I noticed that you *can* set it up so that the PDA sends a dhcp request to the computer. Its just not configured that way "out-of-the-box".]
I have an SL5500 currently plugged into one of my 2 USB (1.1) ports. I went through some grief getting it working on my RedHat 6.2 system initially. Then came the RH 7.3 upgrade which broke my configuration. Ditto for the RH 9 upgrade. (You might notice a trend here....) In fact, every kernel upgrade re-writes the modules.usbmap file which needs to be hacked in order for the usbnet module to configure right. The blacklisting of the CDCEther module thankfully is unaffected by kernel upgrades.
I'll let you know RSN if upgrading to USB 2.0 requires anything new.
ii) Would it be possible to connect in addition an external harddrive to the hub and mount it as mass-storage device while having the ethernet connection running?
In theory, if you can connect your Cable Modem to the same hub and get it to play nicely with your PDA, there' no reason why you can't put an external Hard Drive on as well (though USB 2.0 is strongly recommended here).
Thanks a lot in advance for your answers greets jonas
I want to thank the other kind users here who helped me stabilize my Zaurus configuration a while back! Especially since the only HOWTOs that I could find are woefully out-of-date!
