What other disc devices do you have in the system?  Have you tried to
use USB1.1 instead of USB2.0?  Are you sharing interrupts between USB
and IDE devices?  What if anything does 'hdparm' say about any IDE
devices?  Have you run 'fsck' on your root partition recently?
