Well, I was having the same symptom when booting my Thinkpad X30 from
IDE-harddisk, no initrd. So indeed it does not seem to depend on which
module initrd will load - and it does not seem to be a USB issue either,
since my internal HDD has this symptom as well...
I solved this by adding (i.e. uncommenting) the 'compact' option. Now I have
normal loading time again, but be warned: My lilo.conf-sample said next to
the commented out 'compact' option: 'Faster, but won't work on all systems'

I have absolutely no idea.

I guess it has something to do with the BIOS - as both my old P3-500 and my
new Celeron1000A (boards by FIC and Abit, Award BIOS) on my desktop PC don't
have these symptoms - but I installed them both as well as the Thinkpad from
the same slackware 9.1.0-CDROM, all of them using lilo 22.5.7.2 installed on
/dev/hda. Well, actually /dev/hde on the Abit-board (Onboard-RAID).
