I still don't understand what's going on with that product ID. It's exactly the same as Eero's FHD-Classic. Is it possible that this is merely an enclosure with a USB interface, and it can hold any sort of IDE or ATAPI device?
Yes indeed, the "Classic" enclosure. The 250Gb HDD, however, has product ID 07ab:fc01 In SuSE 9, lsusb gave:
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 0d49:3000 Maxtor Bus 005 Device 002: ID 07ab:fccd Freecom Technologies Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 001 Device 002: ID 07ab:fc01 Freecom Technologies IDE bridge

but dmesg gave:

Very nearly made it, that time!
It set up /dev/sda for the Freecom 250Gb but then failed to verify it and /dev/sda was unusable.
I have posted all the detail I got from verbose output.
The first lot was with the Maxtor and the CD-RW attached and the Freecom 250Gb being unplugged and re-attached. The second was the result of attaching the Freecom 250Gb alone, only about 20 lines.
Thanks very much for all your efforts, Alan, on a Sunday too! Do you have any more time tomorrow? It's late here.
