I do appreciate your info on where to look.  I did several plug/unplug with
a usb-ide dongle I have and with swapping disks.  Seems to work ok.

I noticed that 2.4.26 has the same annoying problem with scsi bus numbers as
2.6 has (IE: it never reuses the same bus number)

Ok.  I haven't followed 2.4 much.  Most of my machines now that still run
2.4 run it because I either don't want to reboot it (or take the time to
compile it =) or they can't run 2.6 properly
