There's not much you can do. One thing to try is to type Alt-SysRq-9
while running at a text console (not an X window). Then all kernel
messages will appear on the screen.

Yes it should. Make sure that you are booting the correct kernel and that
the USB stack object files really were recompiled. You may want to do
rm drivers/usb/core/*.o drivers/usb/host/*.o
and rebuild the USB stack.
