things are working now...solution/workaround is below

suse was using 2.6.8 in 9.2...however I could not find patches/modules
for that one to run on 1950 (needed bnx2, and megaraid_sas for those
interested)...I should add that the 9.2 that I was saying worked was not
on a 1950...was just looking for some clues... 

recompiled with all the usb options...did not help (but there was a lot
of good debug stuff)

went back to the "must be the ehci_hcd stuff", turned it off and it
started working as expected...we don't need the high speed support
currently (only using because the 1950 does not have floppy for
configuration)...so plan to revisit when/if the need arises
