You can shortcut pin 2 and 3 of the socket. When you look at the
socket end of the cable pins are ordered this way:

         +-+
     ----|-|------
   1 \ o o o o o / 5
    6 \ o o o o / 9
        -------

You still need minicom to produce some data and see the echo.

This shortcut setup does not tell you anything about right or wrong
voltages neither does it tell you if RxD and TxD are exchanged. You
will need an oscilloscope to look at the signals. When you press a key
in minicom the signal _should_ come out of pin 3 but for my device it
comes out of pin 2.
