ok.  i'm not doing that though -- would this message show up if, say, I'd
done something like that many suspend cycles ago?  that is, is the "you
screwed up" information stored persistently in the hardware itself?

I modprobe -r uhci-hcd and ehci-hcd as well as hci-usb.  ohci-hcd and
usb-storage are not loaded.
