OK. I have enabled usbmon and produced a log file of the following procedure

mount
cp (device -> pc)
umount

I'll see if I can make head or tail of what's going on, but right now it's a 
few hundred K of meaningless gibberish to me!

The log file is at www.hoovesofdestiny.co.uk/usb_out.txt for anyone who fancies 
having a go at working it out.
