The device doesn't exist before the camera is plugged in, thanks to udev. So, the output is nothing. > What shows up in the "dmesg" log after you plug in the camera and try > to mount it? One thing I just noticed: When I plug in the camera the devices /dev/sdh and /dev/sdh1 are created, but the ownership looks odd to me: max:/dev# ls -l /dev/sdh* brw-rw---- 1 root floppy 8, 112 2007-10-02 13:33 /dev/sdh brw-rw---- 1 root floppy 8, 113 2007-10-02 13:33 /dev/sdh1 Should the ownership really be floppy??! Perhaps my system is expecting a floppy drive there, and that explains why the IO errors occur when the camera is first turned on? I'm wondering if it's possible that udev is doing something wrong here.
