Possibly it's the Bigfoot.  They are known to be very slow. I have a
Bigfoot, a 1.2G I think, and it takes well over half an hour to format when
doing a Linux install, yet has no bad sectors.

It's weird, but thats the way it is.

Now in your error messages you have
<4>hda:timeout waiting for DMA
so possibly some sort of DMA problem, wrong speed, not turned on?
