Sounds like your hardware doesn't correctly support DMA or bus mastering,
could be chipset BIOS or drive while the BIOS is reporting that the IDE
channel and drive are DMA capable. If your BIOS allows you to disable DMA,
then that might be the simplest option, otherwise you can disable DMA during
the install:

Boot from the CD, then, at the boot prompt type

linux ide=nodma .

This may get you past the install stage. You may need to add something like:
hdparm -d0  /dev/hda
to:
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

to disable dma on startup (or recompile the kernel).

Once you are up and running you might want to investigate why your hardware
doesn't support DMA reliably. Check for BIOS updates or known problems with
your M/B/chipset/ BIOS and drive. Check what DMA mode it is attempting to
use. The quantum bigfoot supposedly supports ATA-33 (UDMA mode 2, I
believe).
