oops sent to vik instead of list....

rpmfind.net is a great way to find rpm's, what the dependencies are etc. One of the
best things is you can put in, say, a library name, and it tells you what package you
find it in.

also take a look at this:
http://www.cse.ogi.edu/DISC/projects/independence/overview.html

<quote>Global Dependency Constructor: RPMTC (RPM Transitive Closure):
This tool is for the RPM system administrator. "rpmtc foo.rpm"
will transitively compute the entire set of RPMs necessary to support
the foo.rpm package, i.e. if foo.rpm depends on bar.rpm, and bar.rpm depends
on baz.rpm, RPMTC will report both bar and baz.
RPMTC supports options to query either the installed RPM database, or
a file system directory populated with RPM files.
Individually, each of these tools would enrich the dependence information.
Together, they synergize dependence information. The transitive closure
of dependencies is most useful if it is complete and correct, eliminating
iterative attempts at installing software. The transitive closure can only
be complete and correct if the local dependencies of each individual package
is complete and correct, which can be assured using the local dependency
detector.</quote>
