I would disagree. At least it's good as a backup for ADSL.  56k is
$20/month, ADSL is at least 3 times that. For browsing occasionally and
sending a few emails ADSL is simply stupid, and that's what my friend
will be doing.

Also, 56k is very reliable. ADSL is not. Read the adsl list.
