I get around this by using wget to update a local cache directory of
RH7.2 updates from the French rpmfind.net mirror, which is heaps faster
than the RH site. Not forgetting, of course, to set the machines'
up2date config to leave the RPMs intact after installation.

Then an up2date does a bit of header downloading with the RH server,
finds all the RPMs already downloaded, and does a nice, clean update. So
far I've submitted 2 bugfixes to up2date, and it does seem to be getting
more user friendly. But yes, it is also getting slower as the RH servers
get more heavily loaded.

Some guys at work use Ximian's Red Carpet to update the Gnome stuff, but
it's not compatible with Red Hat all the time.
