This wasn't a man page fix, I had the problem with my old 2x Acer, and found a hack for cdrecord using google. This was about 18 months ago, and cdrecord has been through a couple of versions since then, so it may not be an issue on RH7.2. I was running a mandrake 7.1 at the time..
