I'm surprised you're getting performance that bad, we're typically seeing
4-6Mbps with our 802.11 gear here, over 20-40m...

We also get a good solid 4Mps over 700m with the high gain yagi's we use to
link two of our buildings..

What is the base station you're running to?

I was lucky to get (admittedly crappy brand DLink) wireless network card
to work over a distance of five metres. YMMV but don't expect "wireless
ethernet" rather expect dialup speeds but without wires.
