I do the same but I'd also back up my root directory just in case... ;-)

That's why I never choose the 'upgrade' option -- goes for Windows as
well as Linux.
I usually backup my home and /etc directories, install from scratch and
then set everything up as I like it again.
Yes it takes longer, but I don't have to worry about fixing stuff broken
by the upgrade and it removes the crud files that always seems to
accumulate on a system like gunge under a refrigerator.
I guess you could call it the 'spring clean' approach to upgrading :)
