Not really, and depends a lot on your window manager. First, Top reports the memory X is using, and all your video memory on your video card. That's why X seems so huge. Second, FVWM (and probably other window managers as well) does not use any extra memory for multiple dexktops/viewports/whatever---it simply hides the window when it's not on the current viewport/desktop/whatever (virtual desktops are not an X thing). tim http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/~tnw13 Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur.
