I've had this problem with RH7.2, when accessing a cdrom via nfs. The only way I could get it to eject, was to go back to the remote machine, and umount from there, then umount it from the server. Just halting the remote machine while the drive is mounted, causes the problem you discribe. Sorry cant help you with slackware network install. I've done Rh a few times with no trouble though...
