You must have one of those weird distros ;) 1- My umount does not have a -l option (ugh, I can't tell the difference between an l and an I in this font; I tried both anyway) 2- I have no such thing as /sbin/service However, you got me to look at the available "exportfs" options a little more closely. "exportfs -auv" did the trick. The drive unmounted after that. I had figured earlier that "exportfs -arv" would have done it, but that hadn't worked.
