I've run both Athlon and Intels for quite a while - pricewise the AMDs still give you more bang for your buck .. I will say this Its ALL in the motherboard. Figure out if the motherboard on offer is any good - check tom's hardware magazine reviews etc before commiting a significant portion of that "budget" to what will be the most important part of the machine.
The ASUS brand mentioned has had a good reputation .. Perhaps reply with the model and the list might have further advice. As for Intels the same applies .. the motherboard quality is essential.
