Sorry to be so dense but I don't understand what you mean by
"Neither samba-client*.rpm nor samba-common*.rpm match -- so you haven't
installed the samba daemon."
I have now issued the command
rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/samba-2*.rpm
Did that install the samba daemon ?
setup ... systemservices now lists smb, and I have selected it
I rebooted
/usr/bin/samba start returns
No such file or directory
