so if i use your desktop background to create an icon,
do i need to include the icon in desktop size?

resizing is a kind of derivative work.
the question is: which came first?
the editing or the resizing?

but this opens up the real problem as far as GPLing images goes.
what is the source of an image?

the generic definition is:
the preffered editing format.

for images this would usually be something like xcf/psd the
gimp/photoshop layer formats or equivalents.

any other lossless format if you are not using a layercapable editor,
and maybe jpg if all you are doing is cropping, mirroring, and 90degree
angle rotations (which all can be done lossless even for jpg)

greetings, martin.
