For clarification:
o Darwin is a FreeBSD variant that runs on top of the
Mach microkernel. You can download a version of
this kernel for i386 mahcines.
o OS X is the Kernel/GUI/Application bundle that Apple
makes for its machines. The relationship between
OS X and Darwin is much the same as that between
Solaris and SunOS, RedHat and Linux, and Windows and
Win32[?].
Rumour has it that there *i*s a variant of OS X for i386 machines, but
the product has never seen the light of day, unless Paul knows something
that we don't :)
