I currently use openoffice.
I have used Latex for generating name tags for conferences, using a combination of Octave and Latex. I also have code for creating mesh plots under Latex if anyone is interested. Dabbled with the LatexMusic, very powerful tool, not for your average person, precipice learning curve. The metafont book is a good read and available from the Canterbury University library and informs you how to create your own fonts from scratch. Other good books are "The Latex Companion" and "The Latex Graphics Companion" Further information can be found at http://www.math.canterbury.ac.nz/documentation.shtml I would volunteer to give the talk but I am currently living in Wellington, I will be back over xmas so if anyone wants to discuss it over that period we can arrange a meeting. I am always willing to answer any Latex question, any if anyone has any questions anytime has any questions about latex feel free to email me.
