I recently had a battle with an Edgeport USB to RS232 convertor. My guess is at the bottom of it the pre-2.4.19 usb stuff in the kernel didn't play nicely together. As far as I could see it would work, by itself. But add so much as a USB mouse to the mix and the Edgeport didn't do anything usefull. So I slurped down 2.4.20 and built that. Result, mouse and edgeport plays nicely together. Good little Rat, nice Edgeport. (Yes, this was the excercise that made me post that "How to roll own kernel for RH8" thing.) USB be stuff seems dodgy and shaky, and the kernel developers are fixing and patching as fast as they can, I have found a couple of times now you really do want the latest and greatest stable kernel if you are dealing with USB.
