I agree totally and I thought the same thing so I am running:
kernel-2.4.20.2mdk which *should* do the trick.

USB be stuff seems dodgy and shaky, and the kernel developers are fixing
and patching as fast as they can, I have found a couple of times now you
really do want the latest and greatest stable kernel if you are dealing
with USB.
