When I first joined this group I mentioned that I was having odd problems with my (dial-up) ISP (www.paradise.net.nz)
I gave them ample chance to fix it and I made many attempts to correct it from my end. Broken MTU path discovery was one of the problems, and I could work around that by forcing the mtu down to below their limit. But still other problems persisted. They made some attempts to try identify the problem but eventually I got a dead-end "Works For Us" reply back. I know the problem lies with Paradise since the problem existed on two different modems, two different machines and two different phone lines when connecting to Paradise, but didn't exist via the exact same setup when connecting to 3 different other ISP's. (Also the problem concerned many destination servers, so it wasn't problems on the far side.) In the end I gave up on Paradise. I now use Xtra for my home dial up. It works no problem, no glitches. (I chose them primarily for their "100% satisfaction gaurantee". I figured if I had the same problem there I wouldn't lose anything.) I believe the problem arose when Paradise merged with the TelstraClear mega-ISP. (ie. Paradise used to work fine until around about the merger.) I understand that Paradise broadband Linux users and dial-up Windows users have no problems, but personally I would not recommend any ISP or Virtual ISP in the TelstraClear/Paradise stable to Linux users in Canterbury. This opinion is purely personal based on personal experience and does not represent those of my employer or anyone else. They may have fixed it by now, I don't know, this mail reflects my experience in the past months. John Carter Phone : (64)(3) 358 6639
