I guess the other thing I forgot to ask was whether this is when you are
running X, or when you are running the mouse/trackpad in a console.

The other thing, are you running gpm (the text/console mouse driver?)

To find out enter

/sbin/service gpm status

I guess we also need to know what it is you do after plugging in the
serial mouse. Do you change your mouse driver?

Argggghhhh so many variables....the workshop is probably the best place!
