Well, more like rpm is analagous to deb. apt-get is more like what urpmi 
(spelt correct I hope? I've never used it) is to Mandrake, or RHN to Redhat.

And to answer Steve's question (even when specifically instructed not to ;)  - 
yes, it's CLI. But don't be scared, it's really friendly :)

Same goes for compiling from source. It's usually just a matter of typing 
'./configure', then 'make', then (as root) 'make install'. Straight forward, 
anyone can do it, don't be afraid to try =)
Unless of course something should go wrong - then the CS degree (or some 
programming skills) might be handy ;-)

can't be bothered writing a seperate email, so I just changed the subject

pps. when you download source tarballs, they usually include a file called 
'README' and/or a file called 'INSTALL' - reading one or both of these can 
usually give you some major clues as to how to go about compiling and 
installing :-)
