If you're that new to Linux, you're best off to stay clear of gentoo for
a little longer. Pick one of the desktop-distros made for beginners,
this would include SuSE, Mandrake, Red Hat, and one which includes
ardour. (I personally recommend not to use Debian in this case, I have
my reasons and don't care if others have a different opinion.)

To directly answer your questions: with SuSE, no, unless you put the
tick in the ardour box during install (or any time later). Then, yes.

In your situation you have absolutley no interest in getting the latest
and gratest (or rather, as Nick says, broken) version. You'll probably
spend ages getting it to compile, plus compiling all the other stuff you
don't know about yet which you'll need to compile and install before you
can start on ardour. If you can install ardour from a distribution, all
the also required stuff will be taken care of.

The version on SuSE may be from August, but you'll have it running in a
minute. Good enough for a first look.
