ps. sorry to keep this OT thread going. But I find it interesting. Apologies 
to those who do not. To justify / bring it slightly back on-topic ... these 
devices can be made from an old 486/pentium running linux ;-) The 
gateway/router goes without saying, I'm sure a lot of you are running such a 
machine... but bridges too. 
If you need a cheap switch (ok, so they're pretty cheap nowdays.... but I'm a 
poor student ;-) you can make a makeshift one out of an old pentium (I used a 
P200, but lower *should* be ok I think) packed full of network cards, and 
running ethernet bridging on linux. Using a floppy distro like LRP too, you 
don't even need a HD :-)
